PAST IN THE PRESENT

Find out about early settlement of the differing tribes, pressures leading to the formation of Bechuanaland Protectorate and the development of the independent nation of Botswana. After a visit to the National Museum, we drive through the suburbs of Gaborone to see the village of Odi. Here we tour a traditional cultural village - the Kgotla, homes new and old - before stopping off at the Odi Weavers workshop - see the beautiful hand woven wool tapestries being designed and made. Our next stop is the picturesque village of Mochudi. Here we find the southernmost baobabs in Botswana, the kgotla, the blacksmiths yard and Phutadikgobo Museum. The village is the “Capital” of the Bakgatla tribe and has always been very influential in the history of the area. A picnic lunch is taken overlooking the village from the rocky hills before setting off in search of small craft workshops to be found in the nearby Pilane Village.

Our tour ends with a trip to Bokaa Dam - late afternoon reflections on the water with abundant birdlife. .

JWANENG DIAMOND MINE VISIT

Jwaneng hosts the largest diamond mine reserve in the world, producing 10 million carats annually through the processing of 500,000 tons of rock. It is said that that security is so tight that once a vehicle enters the mine area, it will never leave for fear of smuggling diamonds. Visitors are not able to buy diamonds at any of Botswana’s mines, despite 80% of the diamonds processed at Jwaneng are cut for gem stones, the remaining 20% being for industrial use. Mining is done by blasting and each of the trucks carries 240 tons of rock. Its an impressive and fascinating insight into the key basis of Botswana’s economy. Tour bookings are subject to availability at the mine, and visitors must submit passport details to pass security checks.

The drive to Jwaneng passes through beautiful countryside dotted with rock kjopies, and there is an opportunity to have a picnic lunch at a view point outside Kanye, and a stop at Thamaga Pottery time permitting.

Jwaneng trips are subject to approval by the Diamond Authorities. Advance notice is required.
